Tanker Explodes in Lagos


But for the bravery of a petrol tanker driver and a conductor, the nation’s number one airport, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, would have turned into a disaster zone yesterday.

The driver in particular put his life on the line by driving the tanker far away from the midst of others awaiting loading in the area after discovering that it had caught fire.
Had he not acted, the fire would have spread to other tankers and a major tragedy would have occurred.
But he summoned uncommon courage and moved the vehicle over a distance of 100 metres from the tankers’ bay.
Even at that, the fire razed three other tankers and a stationary saloon car.
But he sustained leg injury while jumping off the tanker before it exploded.
The incident, which occurred at about 3:25pm, caused apprehension in the area as people scampered for safety.
By then, the dress of the conductor identified as  Ajibade Ademola had caught fire.
He jumped into a nearby well to douse the fire and thus saved his life.
An eyewitness said the driver noticed the fire while buying some inner wears from a hawker.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver immediately jumped into the burning tanker and took it away in time enough to survive the explosion.
