Commercial bus drivers’ recklessness blamed for road crashes
No fewer than seven persons were injured following multiple accidents that occurred in the Mile 12 and Agege areas of Lagos State.
The accidents, which occurred
around 6:00a.m. and 4:00p.m. around Fatgbems bus-stop, Apapa-Oshodi Expressway and Dopemu respectively, were said to have been caused by the recklessness of commercial bus drivers.
While three persons sustained serious injuries at Falgbems where an articulated truck laden with a container collided with three commercial buses, four others were said to have been injured at Dopemu.
It was gathered that the three commercial buses, which were involved in the morning accident had stopped on the expressway abruptly to pick passengers.
The truck hit one of the buses and in the course of averting disaster, rammed into the other two.
According to the General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr. Michael Akindele, who confirmed the incident, no life was lost.
He said the agency received an alert through the control room on a road traffic accident involving an articulated truck carrying a container and three commercial buses at the expressway, inward Oshodi.
“This prompted an immediate activation of the agency’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) to the scene. Preliminary investigation carried out revealed that the accident involved a truck with registration number AKD 279 XR and three commercial buses with registration numbers, BDG 721 XJ, GGE 759 XN and KJA 25 XH.
“The accident was as a result of illegal stopping of the commercial bus drivers to pick passenger on the expressway. Three people sustained serious injuries. One person was taken to the hospital by passers-by before the arrival of the ERT, while the two others were given first aid treatment by LASEMA medical team and the Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS) before being taken to the trauma centre for further treatment.”
The LASEMA boss advised motorists to avoid reckless driving, over-speeding and also adhere to all traffic rules and regulation to avoid accident.
It was a narrow escape from death for a retail shop owner at Ojodu and her customers when a sand truck, popularly called tipper, with registration number BDG 446 XM, lost control and rammed into the shop by the entrance of Ojodu Berger Tipper Park.
Three teenage girls, who were at the scene, were shell-shocked at their narrow but miraculous escape from death. They were at the shop to buy sachet water and were waiting to collect their balance when the truck came crashing towards them.
The truck driver was immediately rescued from the scene to avoid being lynched. His fellow tipper drivers took him away and declared him grounded. The reason given was that he was negligent of repairing his truck’s faulty brakes, which had been in that condition before the accident occurred.
